Book Description:

This is the first comprehensive survey of its subject, covering the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and its successor states, the Polish territories, and the Balkans, with the exception of Greece. The background to later developments is provided by a survey of economic life and political conditions between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. the reasons for the slow development of the Industrial Revolution in this area are noted. The authors then proceed to deal with the consequences of World War I, and particular attention is paid to the effects of the German economic expansion into the area. The book concludes with a brief summary of the pos-World War II outlook, and examines the period of transition to socialism. - from the back cover
